A few photos from when Pasha, Blake and I went to the mall to try find 'The dress' for the film last year. Pasha tried on six or seven different dresses, and I was taking photos of each one as we went along. She said she felt like a celebrity. We looked like two PAs getting her ready for a huge event, and everyone working at the stores took us very seriously. We ended up deciding on the first dress we tried on, a strapless, tight black dress from SABA that Blake bought and returned the day after the shoot. After looking at the photos from the day, both Blake and I decided that Pasha's character should wear the dress with the bra straps still showing. Half on, half off. That awkwardness and uncertainty of trying something on in front of someone. Afterwards, we got drinks in the city and talked for hours. The film was kind of falling to pieces at that point, but that afternoon was hilarious and special. I think it was my favourite afternoon last year. It felt almost better than the film itself? Running around with Pasha for an afternoon, trying on several dresses/versions of herself to find 'the right fit'. I feel like it's usually the things outside the film or in the production of it that carry the most salient version of the film, or the emotions behind it. I get worried that these feelings or moments never translate through.
Meeting Pasha was one of the best things about working on the film. We met while in the line to get a drink at Brunetti's. I was so struck by her that I approached her to see if she wanted to do a screen test, and she tentatively agreed, and it all just tumbled on from there. We still meet up every few weeks to see a movie together.
